Just curious to learn if anyone has found that training in the area of 'Play Therapy' has enhanced their clinical work with multiple populations? My recent conversations with some therapists, pediatricians, and educators has involved promoting the field of 'Play Therapy'; specifically describing and operationalizing the process of 'Play Therapy' and reminding others that play is the language of the child. While describing some of the interventions to a local pediatrician, he later commented; "So do you require a gymnasium to do your work? I still don't really understand the sand, manipulatives and this specialty training you have to work with kids." His comment was met with a smile and a suggestion that he read 'Dibs in Search of Self' by Axline.
Depending on the type of therapeutic or clinical practice that one has with children and the interventions that are used may influence their decision to include 'Play Therapy'. The practice of 'Play Therapy' and knowledge related to the usefulness of 'Play Therapy' appears to be slow- going. Personally, the hours of training in the field if 'Play Therapy' has enhanced my work with youth, families and individual adults. Finally, the playful approach in therapy can promote positive change, deepen the therapeutic relationship and promote an optimistic rather that negative perspective of one's difficulties. Please write about your experiences and thoughts realted to the training and practice of 'Play Therapy'.
