Play Therapy Supervision Can be Fun!

This training will discuss the important factors to have in place for effective play supervision with play therapists including a guiding model, informed consent between the play therapy supervisor and supervisee, and an agreement about what play therapy theoretical model(s) and special populations that the supervisor is competent. Cultural competence in supervision will also be addressed. Countertransference and play therapist experiences in the playroom will also be important in our discussion around supervision. Additionally, techniques for adding play and fun into the supervisory experience will be presented and experienced by the participants.

3. Identify three considerations in play therapy supervision using sandtray and Theraplay models

9:30 a.m. APT supervision requirements reviewed; Possible Play therapy Supervision models and requirements for a play therapy Supervisor
10:15 a.m. Break
10:30 a.m. Using different model in play therapy supervision such as Theraplay or sand tray models.
11:00 a.m Learning and practicing fun and helpful play therapy supervisory techniques (group activities to practice together).
11:45 a.m. – 12 noon Questions and reflections

Denise Caldwell, LCSW, RPT-S, is a licensed clinical social worker with over 20 years of clinical experience with children and adults and social work experience. She is a member of the Association of Play Therapists and is a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. She earned her master’s degree at Temple University. In addition to owning her own private practice in Bloomsburg, PA for 14 years, she has worked as a mobile therapist, a home and school visitor in the public schools and a home-based family therapist. She has also done teaching at a college level since 2005 and enjoys mentoring play therapists and social workers as they grow and learn to do the work they love. Denise has certifications in EMDR and Internal Family Systems as well as family therapy certifications. She is also a level 3 Theraplay trained therapist.
