JESSICA COSBY LPC, RPT-S

Board Member

WHAT I DO FOR THE BOARD:

I am currently serving as a Western region training coordinator, but COVID has stalled efforts to move forward in this role.

WHY AND WHEN I JOINED THE BOARD:

I joined the board last year because Jean Camberg, my mentor, had always encouraged me to do so.  I have enjoyed this community and wish I would have joined years ago.

I PLAY AT (WHERE I WORK AND WHAT I DO FOR FUN):

I have a private practice in Clarion, PA.  I enjoy the outdoors- hiking, kayaking, boating.  My family has a camp on the Clarion River and it has been a great escape during a time when vacations have been cancelled.

WHERE I LEARNED TO PLAY (SCHOOL/TRAININGS):

I earned my Community Counseling/Child & Adolescent Specialization/Elementary School certification/ degree from Slippery Rock University.  I attended a one day conference at IUP as a school counselor and had the privilege of learning about play therapy from Dr. Garry Landreth.  Following that experience, I joined a cohort at Harbor House Trainings and pursued play therapy credentialing.

WHY PLAY THERAPY:

I am passionate about my work with children and I immediately fell in love with the approach.

MY FAVORITE PLAY THERAPY BOOK (WHY?):

I love Landreth’s Art of the Relationship.  I am currently reading Schaefer’s The Therapeutic Powers of Play: 20 Core Agents of Change and wish I would have read it earlier in my career as a play therapist.

MY FAVORITE CHILDREN’S BOOK:

I really like Hey Warrior by Karen Young.  Many of the children visiting my office present with anxiety symptoms and this book does a fantastic job describing the mind/body connection.  The book is informative and beautifully illustrated.

MY FAVORITE PLAY THERAPY TECHNIQUE:

I most often use Child-Centered Play Therapy and sand play therapy.

MY FAVORITE PLAY THERAPY QUOTE:

“Play is the highest form of research.” Albert Einstein
